The usual ideas, honestly described
- A signed book. Familiar, inexpensive, and read once. It needs someone to shepherd it, or half your guests walk past the table.
- Polaroids taped onto pages. Beautiful on the table, and limited by film: every retake costs another sheet, and dark receptions produce a lot of retakes.
- Wooden hearts, jenga blocks or puzzle pieces. Guests write on one piece and you assemble it later. Charming, and a job for someone the morning after.
- A fingerprint or thumbprint tree. Decorative, and it tells you nothing about who was there or what they thought.
- Postcards to be posted back to you over the first year. Slow and lovely, and you address and stamp them yourself.
- A photo guest book. Guests use the camera they arrived with, and the pages fill themselves.
Why the photo version fills up when the others do not
Every other idea asks a guest to stop, queue at one table, think of a sentence and write it in front of people. That is a lot to ask of someone halfway through a speech or a dance, and it is why so many books come home half empty.
A photograph is a smaller ask. Guests point the phone they are already holding, press a button, and carry on. They can do it from their own seat, at the same moment as twenty other people, and they see their own picture appear as it arrives, which is what makes them send the second and the third.
What a guest actually does
- Scans the QR code with the phone camera, or types the short address written under it.
- Two buttons: take a photo, or choose from the gallery. Several files at once.
- No app to install, no account, and no name or email asked.
- Photographs and videos up to 25 MB, with iPhone HEIC pictures converted automatically.
- Their own contributions marked as they land, so they can see it worked.

Two of them together
The combination most couples end up happiest with is a paper book and a QR card beside it. The guests who want to write, write; everyone else photographs. If someone writes something you want in the album as well, photograph the page and add it through the guest page like any other picture.
